Julie James writes the kind of books that make me want to pour myself a glass of good wine and cuddle under a cosy blanket for the evening. That’s why I always wait for her books so eagerly—they never fail to deliver that perfect combination of cute and sexy, fun and serious. The Thing About Love is all that, and more.
He said, she said
Enemies to lovers are always super fun, the journey turbulent and the end rewarding. Jessica Harlow and John Shepherd have History. (Or, histories, rather. Because their versions Do Not Match.) The kind where one tiiiiiny misunderstanding unleashes an entire war between two of the FBI academy’s star pupils. Highly competitive, distractingly gorgeous, and all around infuriating kind of pupils. Or so they say. (Again, the versions Do No Match.) Thankfully, there’s always graduation.
Except after graduation comes Adult Life, with all its complications. Worse, walking hand in hand with Fate, life brings Jessica and John to the same FBI office. Then casually throws them onto the same assignment. Undercover. Fuuuuuun.
And together they did cool things
As much as I love reading about Julie James’ lawyers, it is always the FBI that really makes these books so delightful for me. Maybe it’s the action, maybe it’s the camaraderie, maybe it’s just All The Cool Things they do. This is the first time we see a female agent. Which is awesome. Refreshing. And so, so freaking fun. Because if there is one thing Jessica Harlow refuses to do, it is to lose to the arrogant, sexy special agent who kicked her butt in the past.
The Thing About Love is a bit heavier on the plot and the information dumps compared to other books in the series, with most of the story revolving around an undercover assignment as well as John’s trials with the HRT. Personally, I found that interesting. But if that’s not your thing… No worries, Julie James masterfully balances it all with fantastic characters, sassy dialogue and really sexy times. The fun does not end. (Plus, the usual wine and high heel appreciation. Always a win with me, that.)
Hopelessly in love, again
The Thing About Love is yet another delicious, sexy treat from Julie James that effortlessly made it to the top of my Ultimate Cuddly Comfort Reads list. It’s the kind of romance novel that just… makes you smile and swoon and eat a lot of chocolate while possibly daydreaming about male bodies worthy of Thor. And undercover work is just super cool, okay? Total win. Can’t wait for MORE from the author, already. Thankfully there is always the first six books in the series to reread…

FBI agents Jessica Harlow and John Shepherd have a past. The former lawyer and cocky Army Ranger clashed during their training at Quantico and gladly went their separate ways after graduating from the Academy. Six years later, the last thing either of them expects is to be assigned to work as partners in a high-profile undercover sting.
For both of them, being paired with an old rival couldn’t come at a worse time. Recently divorced from a Hollywood producer and looking for a fresh start, Jessica is eager to prove herself at her new field office. And John is just one case away from his dream assignment to the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team. In order to nail a corrupt Florida politician, they’ll have to find a way to work together—a task that becomes even trickier when they’re forced to hole up at a romantic beachfront resort as part of the investigation. Suddenly, the heat behind their nonstop sparring threatens to make the job a lot more complicated...
